Portrait of Leda

Leda Annest with Phil Moore.

How to describe? This is the only record Miss Annest has ever made. Phil Moore is better known for '50's and 60's bachelor pad lounge music. But to hear Leda's voice - it is have it seared into your ears for all time.

The Best of Leonard Cohen

Little bit down tonight.

Chick Corea - My Spanish Heart

Let's see - Piano, Jazz, Stanley Clarke on bass, what could go wrong? This has been in constant rotation since the mid '70's, first on vinyl, then cassette, then on CD.

Good, good music.

Sadly enough, myself, trying to get an assignment done.

Oh, but Blonde on Blonde (Dylan) in the background.

Honey, I want you.
I want you.
I want you, so bad.

Oldies night:

Tom Rush - The Circle Game and Eric Anderson - Blue River.

Fire up the phonograph, Chuck, and set the wayback machine for 1969!

Ali Farka Toure / Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu

I'm a big fan of both Toure and Cooder. This is a great album: melodic and rythmic. Can't deny that the roots of the blues lie east of the US.

Dayna Kurtz. Music from Downtown

Don't remember how I heard about her, but what a great cd. Very quirky, she has a great range - deep to high, and a great voice for jazz, although this is NOT a jazz recording. Very interesting lyrically, as well - very grown-up.

Carlos Vives (in espanol, no joda!)

This is a copy of the original, (which my son keeps swiping) so I don't remember the exact CD title. It's the one with "Si, Si, Si" and "Fruta Fresca".

For anyone not familiar with Carlos Vives, he's a Colombian actor / singer who has worked very hard to both preserve and bring along folkloric music from Colombia, meaning that while he makes use of traditional instrumentation, he also electrifies it a bit. Really fun to listen to, great for blasting as you sail on the highway.

The Living Road - Lhasa de Sela

I really like this CD. It is a worthy follow-up to Lhasa de Sela's first CD (La Llorona), which is just incredible. More about that one at a different time.

Do you know how sometimes you have such high expectations for an artist after an amazing debut album and they completely blow it on the next one? NOT so with this one. On this CD, Lhasa sings in Spanish, French and English and the lyrics are translated in all three languages.

Her voice is - like smoke, but liquid and personal. Not smoke like Nina Simone, but more personal, as if you just inhale her songs. The ninth song on this cd (My Name), I can just play it over and over again.

Go buy this CD.

Various, as compiled by a friend of mine.

Let's see, Black Crowes, Martin Sexton, Belly, Cocteau Twins, Jack Johnson, Bono, Peter Gsbriel, Morphine, Lyle Lovett, more. A gift from a friend of mine, music that she thought I would like. Very nice mix cd. It seems to me that my friend put great thought into it, thought hard about the songs and I am very flattered that she made the effort. Hope I make one as nice for her.

Hang on Little Tomato - Pink Martini

I don't even know how I heard of these folks. Ever buy a CD sight-unseen (unheard) and been so taken by it that you more copies to give away? No? Then buy this one.

Let's see. Nick Drake, Ani Defranco, the Beatles, just a whole slew of stuff in a quiet playlist. Oh yes, and the Mamas and the Papas and Nusrhat.
